Heroic boy, 8, who saved family from fire given firefighter's funeral 

Tyler Doohan, who died while trying to rescue his grandfather from a fire that broke out in a mobile home, was made an honorary firefighter during his emotional funeral, which featured a remembrance from his mother and his fourth-grade teacher.

The heroic boy from upstate New York who saved six relatives but died trying to save his grandfather from a blaze was honored with a full firefighter's funeral Wednesday.
Tyler Doohan, who was just 8 years old, was laid to rest at St. John of Rochester Catholic Church in front of hundreds of mourners.

"This is a helmet we give to the family to symbolize that Tyler is indeed a part of the brotherhood of firefighters, as an honorary firefighter in Penfield," Ebmeyer told the Mass.
The funerals of two other relatives who passed in the fire were also held at the same time.

Doohan's mom Crystal Vrooman and his fourth-grade teacher Denise Alfieri paid tribute to the tragic child during the service.

"You're a hero, baby," WYFF4 reports his mother as saying through tears, adding, "You did it huge. I know you're watching this go on, and you should be so proud of yourself."

The East Rochester boy was staying with relatives in Penfield on Jan. 19 when at 4:45 a.m. he spotted a fire in the single-wide trailer.
He was able to wake up six relatives, including a 4- and a 6-year-old, and call for help from firefighters and sheriff's deputies.

Doohan then went back into the trailer to rescue his disabled grandfather. But he was overcome by the heat and smoke. The pair was later found on a bed in the back room.
Fire crews said it looked like Doohan had been trying to lift his relative when he passed out.
