Army reconnaissance teams in Land Rovers arrived this morning in flood-hit
areas of Somerset as military planners sized up the scale of their
deployment to help villagers marooned for up to a month.
Six teams fanned out across the Somerset Levels while three planners began
talks with officials from Somerset County Council after its urgent plea for
help yesterday.
The reconnaissance mission is expected to take just a few hours and could be
followed as soon as today with the deployment of specialist amphibious
vehicles and other materiel from Army bases at Taunton and Yeovil to help
deliver food and
